Split: Holy Ghost Machine Gun
Bombay-based hard rock band Split has recently released a new single titled “Holy Ghost Machine Gun” from their upcoming album ‘P is for Pig’. The song is also scheduled to be featured on the Great Indian Rock compilation.
The middling post-grunge track seems to be a first person platitude about the use of violence in the name of religion or god. Produced by Fali Damania, the bass seems to be missing in action, overpowered by the chunky guitars while singer Garreth’s inflection certainly owes a great deal to Chris Cornell. It’s just as well, since he has got the range to back it up. The most interesting part of the song is the middle eight breakdown, where guitarists Mel and Aviv noodle around to create a sense of tension as Garreth repeats the refrain of “In the name of the father, in the name of the son,â€? till it reaches boiling point and the band goes all out to end the song with a full scale rock out.
Fans of “My House” and “Pig Society” will lap up “Holy Ghost Machine Gun”, but one gets the feeling that the band needs to shake things up a bit and look to tread on uncharted paths, because there is a palpable lack of zing in their sound.
