The Kala Ghoda Arts Festival ‘07
Intro text by Arun Kale | Photographs by Berges Malu
Since 1999, the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival has been Bombay’s premier arts and culture festival. Last year, the festival saw lots of music — with full-scale shows held in Azad Maidan featuring the likes of Indian Ocean, Bombay Black, Kailash Kher, Parikrama and Zero. This year, Kala Ghoda saw live music at Horniman Circle, right opposite the Asiatic library, with (unfortunately) not nearly as many performances as the last time around. The most notable performances from the festival this year were by rock band Merzhin and ace percussionist Sivamani.
Merzhin is a six-member band from France, whose music is an interesting combination of Celtic influences with traditional alternative rock.
Sivamani, of course, needs no introduction. The son of Chennai-based percussionist S M Anandan, Sivamani started playing the drums when he was just seven years of age. Having performed with the likes of Ustad Zakir Hussain, Louis Banks and Trilok Gurtu, he has also been instrumental in creating the music for various Indian film soundtracks, including Rang De Basanti, Lagaan, Dil Se, and Roja. He is undoubtedly one of India’s finest percussionists.
