Them Clones: In the Name of God

By Rajarshi Sanyal | March 3, 2007

Split Magazine: Them ClonesIf this is the first Them Clones song you’ve heard after seeing them nail Rage Against the Machine covers live, I won’t blame you for being surprised. Essentially this song falls into the genre of alternative rock and is a softer number, with aggressive undertones perfectly suited to the theme, thanks to wonderful guitar layering supported by excellent drumming.

The samples in the beginning provide the main theme of the song. War. Terrorism. Effects and Consequences. Although it’s a theme repeated a million times by millions of musicians, it’s not one which will cease to exist for the human race for quite some time. A song ringing with a sincere chorus, it could easily be one of the best compositions by Them Clones.

Lyrically, this track talks about the first hand experience of a soldier at war. Metaphoric descriptions and irony etches through four and a half minutes of passionate requests for an end to war. When you listen to this song more carefully, you can’t help but associate the theme with everything you see around you. Although it talks about war and a soldier’s first-hand impressions, you can’t help but notice that the underlying subtlety also reflects day-to-day happenings. It would be more accurate to say that this track ironies violence in general. Here’s hoping the listeners are able to learn from this song, and apply the same in their every day lives.
