Galeej Gurus: Full Meals By The Wayside

By Shreya Sanghani | November 17, 2007

Split Magazine: Galeej GurusThe unique brand of progressive funk practised by the Galeej Gurus works its magic with the original “Full Meals By The Wayside”. The band usually closes gigs with this one, and listening to it, you would understand why. One of the best things about this song is the riff that has the capacity to make the audience head bang and maintain a charged atmosphere. On stage, this song can be amazingly rendered — it’s got that raw energy and appeal required to make it a crowd favorite.

Quite apart from the stage potential, the song has an interesting history. “Full meals” is a euphemism for sleeping with a prostitute in a village near band member Ananth Menon’s school. The band picked up the wacky idea to incorporate it into one of their songs. “Wayside” was a bar the band used to frequent at the time that this song was being written. The Galeej Gurus decided to pay a tribute to it by completing the name of the song using the word “wayside”, thus giving a whole new meaning to the combined phrase — a worthy tribute to their interpretation of experiences, which are then translated into music.

Definitely a song worth checking out, and a treat to witness if you’re watching them live. Special kudos to bassist Matthew Harris for coming up with the fantastic riff — the song wouldn’t quite have been as effective without it. Original songs by rock musicians in India need a lot of support to thrive, and this song is an example of the kind of potential musicians here possess to compose and perform original music. Recommended for those who agree with this.

Watch a rather cool live performance of “Full Meals By The Wayside” at this location.
