Third Sovereign: Horrified Visions
The power-packed metal quartet from Aizawl, Mizoram, announce themselves to the world on an irresistible four-track EP playing just over a dozen minutes.
One of the many pleasing things about Third Sovereign is their organic and unadulterated sound. The line-up of Mala on vocals and Anshuman on guitars (currently replaced by Vedant and Benjamin respectively) is magnetic in its caustic aggression, and the best rhythm section in the Indian metal scene, Jonah on bass and Reuben on drums bounce off each other and produce a thundering sound that’s warm and easy to sink into, one that truly explodes in a live setting, as they did at Resurrection VI.
Over these twelve minutes, the band align themselves behind the steady buzzing wall of guitars and Mala’s lung-emptying growls never quite stray too far away or indulge themselves. Here is death metal at its very basic level, in so far as the technicality and/or virtuosity is a given, yet is secondary to the inherent wealth of distorted and plunging rhythms, overflowing with each song and leave you wanting more. Here is death metal as Chuck Schuldiner intended it.
