Khadki Junction Blues: Contemplate
To say that “Contemplate” is a beautiful song does not do it justice. Khadki Junction Blues’ brand of world fusion is mesmerising. This is the kind of song that one can listen to over and over again. Even if you don’t understand Bengali, give this a listen. The variety of influences subtly detectable in the song is really good.
The band has merged eastern and western sounds very harmoniously — the effect is not jarring at all and feels completely right. The vocals and tabla are worth a special mention as well, as both are quite brilliant. Quite simply put, what Khadki Junction Blues has created is really quality music. Lyrically too, the song is quite beautiful. The lyrics and the composition complement each other, and don’t let the song down.
Vocalist Prithwiraj’s voice makes him sound years older than he is, a fact which should make him proud. The lyrics speak of a craving for peace in the calm breeze and the laughter of an innocent child, of dreams that lie on burning trains and along unfinished horizons, and the agonised screaming of a loved one heard in the distance.
There are questions in the song, and the lyrics read like the finest poetry. Those who understand Bangla and come across this song are lucky, because they will be able to understand the song in all its glory. The steadiness and calmness of the vocals contrasts with the pain in the lyrics.
