Livewire 2007: India’s Top Rock Competition Is Back!
IIT Bombay’s annual rock competition Livewire is back this year, with prizes worth Rs 50,000 in cash and vouchers of over Rs 60,000 from Furtado’s, not to mention the recording time — there will certainly be no lack of motivation for bands.
For the uninitiated, Livewire, for over 20 years, has not only been supporting the Indian rock scene but also providing a launch pad for most of the country’s better-known rock acts. Parikrama, Zero and Pentagram became poster boys for rockers in the country after performing at Livewire.
“We played for the first time at Mood Indigo in 1995. We attribute that concert as the reason behind getting Parikrama an all-India reputation. It was phenomenal,” says Subir Malik of Parikrama. Sidd Coutto from Zero feels the same way about the competition, “Livewire is the rock institution. Playing at IIT is a dream that every new band fosters.”
The headlining bands this year will be Zero and Thermal And A Quarter. Zero, as many remember, won the Livewire competition in 2000, and are returning to IIT yet again as pros. Thermal And A Quarter really need no introduction — one of the biggest bands from southern India, they have opened for Deep Purple and Jethro Tull and have great albums like ‘Jupiter Cafe’ and ‘Plan B’ under their belt.
The elimination rounds of the competition will be held on December 27 and 28, during which each band will be given 30 minutes to impress the judges with their brand of music. The top three bands as selected by the judges will perform in the Open Air Theatre on December 29, and will open for Zero and TAAQ in front of a 15,000-strong rock-crazy crowd. With 50,000 watts of music and some of the top bands in the country, you definitely don’t want to miss this gig.
